Backbone mounting system

Built Strong. Made to Fit.

Backbone doesn't just sit on your roof, it looks like it belongs there. It's the mounting system behind your Pioneer Platform, and the part that makes the whole setup work as one.

Every roof is different, so every Backbone is designed for a specific vehicle. It follows the lines of your roof for a tight, low-profile fit, and spreads the weight of your load evenly through the vehicle's body. The result is a solid, stable base that performs on the road and off it.

Built strong, designed to fit and made to look good, Backbone with Pioneer gives you a clean, integrated setup without the bulk. Load up, hit the track and know your platform is built on something solid, from the first trip to the hundredth.

BUILT STRONG

A solid foundation for your Pioneer Platform or Pioneer Tradie.

Even load spread

Distributes weight evenly through the vehicle's body.

Sleek profile

Sits low and clean for a factory-finished look.

Aerodynamics & noise

Cut the wind.

At highway speed, a roof platform is mostly a fight with the air. The Pioneer 6 was redrawn to win it. Every edge, every plank and every fairing was reshaped to slip through the wind instead of shoving against it — cutting drag by up to 60% over the platform before it.

That starts with the profile. A lower, cleaner leading edge and a tapered plank design guide air over and around the deck rather than letting it slam into a wall. Interplank fairings close the gaps where wind used to catch and whistle, smoothing airflow across the whole surface. Less turbulence, less buffeting, and far less of the roar that usually comes with carrying a rack.

On the road, that shows up in two places you'll actually notice: at the bowser and in the cabin. Lower drag means less fuel burned hauling your setup to the trailhead. And because it's the quietest platform we've ever built, conversations, calls and playlists win out over wind noise — even fully loaded, even at speed.

Aerodynamic profile

A lower, tapered deck redrawn to cut drag by up to 60% over its predecessor.

Interplank fairings

Close the gaps between planks to kill wind whistle and smooth airflow.

Quietest ever

Stands up to salt, mud and rain without rust or fade.

Build & finish

Takes a beating.

Gear gets dragged. Boxes slide, jerry cans scrape, recovery boards grind across the deck. Over time, that's what wears a platform out — not the big hits, but the daily abrasion of loading and unloading in the real world.

So the Pioneer 6 wears the hardest coating we've ever applied — a finish engineered to resist scuffs, scratches and the scars of everyday use, then corrosion-tested to take on salt, mud, dust and rain without fading or rusting. The corners are moulded from glass-reinforced nylon, built to absorb the knocks that dent or crack lesser racks.

It means a platform that still looks the part after years of hard use, and keeps doing its job long after the trips that earned it the scratches. Backed, as always, by the Rhino-Rack warranty.

Hardest coating ever

Our toughest finish yet, built to shrug off scuffs and scrapes.

Corrosion tested

Stands up to salt, mud and rain without rust or fade.

Reinforced corners

Glass-reinforced nylon absorbs the knocks of real-world use.

Versatility

Work. Then play.

Most racks force a choice: a work rack or an adventure rack. The Pioneer 6 refuses to pick. It's the most modular platform we make — designed to carry a tradie's load Monday to Friday and an explorer's kit all weekend.

The full-length deck and length-wide mounting mean you can reconfigure it for whatever the day demands: ladder racks and load bars for the job site, then awnings, tents, recovery boards and water carriers for the track. Mounting points run the length of the platform, so gear goes where you need it — not just where the rack allows.

One platform, two lives. No second rack, no swapping systems, no compromise between earning a living through the week and getting away from it on the weekend.

Fully modular

Reconfigure mounting for work gear or adventure kit in minutes.

Length-wide mounting

Fix accessories anywhere along the deck.

One rack, every job

Trade through the week, adventure on the weekend.

Weight & strength

Lighter. Tougher.

Carrying capacity usually comes at a cost: weight. More strength means more metal, more metal means a heavier platform sitting on your roof before you've loaded a single thing. The Pioneer 6 breaks that trade-off.

We re-engineered the platform around higher-strength alloys that hold full load capacity while shedding 20% of the weight of the platform before it. Less mass up high means a lower centre of gravity, less of your roof's load rating spent on the rack itself, and a platform that's genuinely easier to lift on and off between trips.

The payoff is in your numbers. Every kilo the platform doesn't weigh is a kilo left over for the gear that matters — the tent, the recovery kit, the load you actually came to carry. You get heavy-duty strength without spending your rating just holding the rack up there.

Stronger alloys

Higher-strength aluminium holds full capacity at 20% less weight.

Lower centre of gravity

Less mass up top for more stable, predictable handling.

Easier on, easier off

Lighter to fit, and lighter to remove when you don't need it.

Drop in, not thread in

Traditional channel nuts have to be fed in from the end of the bar and slid into place. The patented Zwifloc™ nut drops straight into the channel wherever you need it and sits flush under the lip, no end-loading, no aperture to line up.

Place it anywhere

Add a bike carrier between two roof boxes, or slot a light bracket into the last free gap, without loosening and shuffling everything else along. Every accessory goes exactly where you want it, and the rest of your setup stays put.

Twist in, twist out

A turn of the bolt rotates a high-tensile nut to lock beneath the channel edge; back it off and it lifts straight out. Add, remove or reposition your gear in seconds, and change your layout as the trip demands.

One ecosystem

The same Zwifloc™ hardware works across Pioneer platforms, Reconn-Deck bars and crossbars, so your accessories move with you. Many products now ship with Zwifloc built in, and gear you already own can be retrofitted.
